  • Description: Promotes and protects the health and wellbeing of all persons in the City of Berkeley. Administers state and local regulations Environmental Health Programs:
    • Retail Food Facility Permit and Inspection. Inspect all retail food facilities such as restaurants and markets. Ensures compliance with sanitation and hygiene laws.
    • Community Noise. Mandated by the Berkeley Municipal Code (BMC) and sets forth standards by which noise is measured.
    • Public Pool. Inspections of Berkeley's public pools. Ensures adherence with appropriate health and safety standards
    • Smoking Pollution. Mandated by State law and the Berkeley Municipal Code (BMC).
    • Storm water Inspection. Mandated by State requirements. The City of Berkeley, along with the County of Alameda are required to put in place a storm water compliance program.
    • Waste Tire Enforcement. Work with businesses, property owners and other agencies. The City hopes to reduce illegal dumping of waste tires, and improve the quality of life in Berkeley.
    • Community Outreach. Health inspectors in the Division of Environmental Health are active in community outreach. Staffs informational booths for outreach.
    • Emergency Response. Staff respond to emergencies related to food facilities. Example: outbreak of foodborne illnesses, sewage overflows, water line breaks, etc.
    • Tattooing, Body Piercing and Permanent Cosmetics
