Description: This is a federal grant program for low-income seniors to put them in a position to volunteer in local public school settings, giving extra time and attention to children with special needs. The program provides a stipend based on volunteer hours, mileage reimbursement based on travel expenses, and one meal each volunteer day, provided by the school host site. The seniors have a reason to get up in the morning, knowing they are needed by the children. The lack of public transportation in Humboldt County is a definite drawback. Dial-a-Ride in Eureka does enable some volunteers to participate who would be unable to otherwise. The support and cooperation of school administrators and teaching staff is critical to the operation and continuation of this program.
