- Description: When a worker dies, members of his/her family may be eligible for benefits if he/she earned enough credits while working. Those who may be eligible include: 1. Widow or widower age 60 or older 2. Widow or widower age 50 or older and disabled 3. Widow or widower of any age who is caring for a child under age 16, or a disabled child receiving Social Security 4. Children if they are unmarried and under 18; or under 19, and a full-time student in an elementary or secondary school 5. Children age 18 or older if they are severely disabled (the disability must have started before age 22) 6. Parents, if they were dependent on deceased for at least half of their support 7. One-time payment of $255, paid only to widow(er) or minor children
