- Description: Provides free civil legal assistance on a variety of issues. Serves income-eligible residents in Shasta, Lassen, Modoc, Siskiyou, and Tehama County. Legal services cover the following types of cases: Economic stability: Issues with benefits programs. (Does not help with initial application.) Social Security/SSDI/SSI, IHSS, Unemployment, General Assistance, CalWORKS, CalFresh, or homeless assistance. Housing preservation: (Serves homeowners and renters.) Evictions, unsafe or uninhabitable housing, and foreclosures. HUD and subsidized housing programs. Mortgage and utility payment assistance programs. Disability rights Health-related issues: Medi-Cal, Medicare, Covered California, private insurance, or questions about health rights. Probate Guardianship: Grandparents raising grandchildren. Senior issues: Estate planning assistance (advanced health care directive, power of attorney, will information through workshops, etc.). Elder abuse. Adults ages 60 and up in Tehama County - call Passages at 800-822-0109. For problems regarding retirement programs, call Western States Pension Assistance Project at 866-413-4911. Programs may include 401ks, pensions, and defined benefit plans. General information for wills and probate matters. (Contact for workshop schedule.)Criminal record expungement assistance. (Contact to be put on waitlist for workshop.) Disaster survivors: Denial of FEMA, property damage, impact on job, housing situation. Hosts community legal education workshops and clinics to promote awareness of legal rights. Provides referrals to community partners.Does not provide certain services including: Family law Criminal defense Traffic fines or violations Bankruptcy Small claims Immigration.
