  • Description: Organizations that are open to the public as in severe weather events. Warming Shelters and Centers are buildings open to help locals avoid cold-related illnesses during severe weather.Extreme Weather Winter SheltersCities and Sacramento County follow guidelines adopted in 2022 to determine when to open extreme weather winter shelters.The NWS Sacramento provides probabilistic data with a 50% or greater chance of low temperatures at 32 degrees or lower for 3 consecutive days.The NWS Sacramento issues a Partner Email, Frost Advisory or Frost Warning or Freeze Warning in addition to:Abnormal animal mortality due to extreme cold.Abnormal human medical emergencies and mortality due to extreme cold conditions.SMUD electrical emergency and/or extended power outages due to extreme cold conditions or supply constraints.In addition, there are multiple regional HART (Homeless Assistance Resource Teams) organizations that work with local churches to offer a rotating emergency shelter program during winter. Guests are shuttled to the church hosting the shelter for the night and returned to the in-take location the next morning. Shelters provide a hot dinner and breakfast-to-go and a sleeping bag and cot. Space is limited.Warming CentersDuring business hours Sacramento County Library Branches are places for community members to warm up.Warming Centers allow people to find refuge from weather during winter but typically do not provide sleeping accommodations.Free SacRT Rides to and from Warming Shelters. SacRT has partnered with the City of Sacramento and Sacramento County to provide free rides on fixed-route bus and light rail to and from warming centers.
