    Provides free library service to San Francisco residents who cannot access printed reading material due to a visual impairment or print disability. Center is part of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), Library of Congress. Registered patrons check out talking books, braille books, and audio-described DVDs. A variety of access technology (AT) including:

    • AT Software for screen reading
    • Magnification, scanning, learning differences
    • Braille
    • Braille on Demand SFPL Large Print Collection
    • Accessible Scanning
    • Computers
    • Desktop video magnifiers
    • scanning and reading software
    • Braille embosser
    • Scan printed material and read the text in a computer voice

    Hosts book clubs, a writer's salon, a Spanish-language music appreciation group, and other community events.

    In the TBBC and other Main Library Locations:

    Reading machines scan printed material and read the text in a computer voice. Computer workstations with screen magnification. . Voice output/screen readers, (ZoomText and JAWS) scanners with OCR, and printers

    In Branch Libraries:

    Laptop computers with screen magnification and voice output/screen readers (ZoomText and JAWS). Some computer workstations with screen magnification (ZoomText)

San Francisco residents who have a disability or long-term medical condition that prevents you from visiting the library may use Home Library Services. . Educators living or working in SF may apply for a Teacher Card. . SFPL also offers Welcome, Digital Access, and Visitor cards for those who don't have CA ID. TBBC Applications If you live in San Francisco and would like to receive NLS talking books, please fill out an application. If living outside San Francisco, can be put in touch with a network library.
